Maps of New Mexico

The following links are to scans from my New Mexico map collection.

I scanned the New Mexico page from the 1926 Clason Highway atlas. Due to limitations in scan page size, this is divided into north and south. This does not show the U.S. highway designations (other states in this atlas do), and indicates the route numbering that existed prior to implementation of the U.S. system.

New Mexico 1926 - North (441 kb)

New Mexico 1926 - South (472 kb)

For comparison, Alan Hamilton's Arizona highways page has a scan of the 1927 New Mexico highway map after implementation of the U.S. highway system. You will note that there was renumbering of many routes, not just the routes that became U.S. highways.

The following maps of Santa Fe show the growth of this community. In the earliest maps, note that traffic on U.S. 84-85-285 are routed right through the Plaza (on streets laid out in the early 17th century). By the early 1950s, the first truck bypass is marked. The 1972 map shows the city with the formal bypasses of the Plaza area, but with the U.S. routes still routed through that area (though not directly around the Plaza). The inset map from the 2005 state map shows that most central streets are no longer in the state highway system.
